Year End 2015

It is afternoon and the sun is shining warm through the plate glass window as George and I relax, looking out over San Francisco Bay. On a clear day such as today, we can see all three bridges. Right now I have a lovely view of not just the Golden Gate, but the Marin Headlands, the Berkeley Marina and a lot of redwoods without leaving my chair. There is a remarkable absence of sailing vessels on the Bay. Apparently the current 11*C/52*F is just too cold for most around here. I have been seeing an amazing number of winter coats, hats and gloves along with heavy boots.

Seriously. Winter boots. As I wandered around the local holistic pet food store (yes, really) looking at the piles of knitted dog sweaters, hats and pet booties I had to wonder. Making the remark that it wasn’t really cold, I received several strange looks from the sales personnel one of whom asked if I was originally from the Midwest or somewhere else that actually had a real winter. Of course she is, another clerk replied – she is wearing a hockey jersey – at which point I remembered that I had purchased a Minnesota Wild Jersey this past Sept and tossed it on this morning in honor of hockey season. (The Wild are playing St Louis at 1900 Central Time, but I don’t have a TV. If I was really ambitious I would call the Eldest and invite myself over to use her TV as she is hung with a 2 year Comcast Contract and gets like 500 stations..

(break here while we picked up take-away, grabbed Noah after work and headed to Shana’s in Richmond. As it turns out – those 500 channels don’t include the premium sports channels. so we ate, watched The Hobbit (one of them) and came home still well on the side of safe driving time).

So – here I am in Berkeley, awakening the force

The start of "the Force Awakens"

The start of “the Force Awakens”

and making progress on the fractal cross stitch.

there are a lot of color changes....

there are a lot of color changes….

At least I don’t have to make any major moves next year…..

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!

Glad to hear that you are in your new home. Were you able to see any fireworks on NYE? Living in the hills and climbing stairs you’ll stay in shape. Have a happy New Year, I’m hoping our paths cross again in 2016.
