Walking in Honolulu

Before one sets out on a “short” hike, it would be smart to check both the weather and a real map. Just saying.

The raindrops weren’t actually all that frequent, the roads were more or less where Apple Maps (and associated GPS) said they were, and the opening hours on both Costco and Fiddlestickstoo were accurate! What more could I want?

A bus system that doesn’t cost $3.00/ride – cash only? Maybe? Humidity lower than the outside temperatures? Might be really nice. You have heard the phrase – “Its not the heat, it is the humidity….” Yes? Having spent more than my fair share of months in the Middle East where temperatures get significantly higher than any US location (except perhaps portions of TX, AZ, & NM) – there is NO question in my mind. It is the humidity. The air is sticky, sweating doesn’t help, and the idea of drinking fluids? Bleh!

So there I am – out the gate of Pier 2 and hanging a left along the sidewalk next to the highway. And I walk. And walk, and walk some more. At some point I checked and found that I was going to be arriving at my destination too early. Hey! According to the helpful map – I will be walking within a couple of blocks of Costco. Checking my wallet – I have my card so detour time.

First challenge for me – the layout was mirror of our nearest store in Richmond. Ok – I can deal with that. Second? Size small? Doesn’t exist. Seriously. I asked one of the women working there. She laughed. They get in less than 10% size smalls (nice summer tops and all of that) and sell out in less than a day. The XL, XXL, XXXL etc sit there forever. If it wasn’t for some of the tourists off the ships….

So – no luck on another cool cotton top like the one I found in Richmond. But in any case, I had killed off enough time to be able to head to what appeared to be the only needlework store in the area. Fiddlestitckstoo is what it is called. Not terribly big – overall not much bigger than my cabin but well laid out with all the important things. Some patterns, some fabric, hoops, q-snaps, ALL the DMC floss, a huge selection of specialty floss, and a variety of items for needlepoint.

I picked up floss and a q-snap extension, then finished out my hike back to the ship with a detour to pick up a couple of high lighters. Overall? Almost 9km and I was beat. I didn’t head back out to see anything in the afternoon, instead hanging out on deck 14 and relaxing.

Weird photos of the day

another elevator creature…

and the most photo’d cabin door on ship.

I am really hoping they had a great cruise.

Tomorrow is the turnover day. I finally got the information for those of us staying on for the next cruise on the who/where/what etc by asking at Guest Services. Letters with the relevant information never made it to housekeeping and so never made it to our cabins….

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!
