Tortola

The dock for this stop is located in Road Town. This particular island (Tortola) is part of the British Virgin Islands and is still under British Control. Or call it part of the British Empire so they don’t have to admit that their influence really ends at Northern Ireland on one side and the Chanel on the other…

It was an early, very early arrival and we will have an early departure. The day is bright, clear, warm with blue skies and seas. I waited till a reasonable time to get off the ship, then went for a walk along a couple of the roads. Yes, it is another left hand drive location. It was also easy to see who was local and not by how they wandered down the sidewalks.

Early enough and there was some traffic, but with enough breaks that it was possible to cross roads.  Looking on the map – there are three “museums” in town – 1) Prison Museum – no, not wanting that 2) Hurricane related museum – maybe and

3) Old Government House. Now this has historical interest for me. As it turned out – it opened at 0900 in the morning so I had time to walk through a public garden across the street, see our ship across the inlet, not exactly hiding behind the Radisson Ship that arrived shortly after us.

This particular museum had lovely staff. They would take american currency (cash, credit, debit card). Both were natives but had lived in a number of other locations (countries, islands, etc). They were well versed on the history of the house, the individuals who had lived there. It is no longer the appointed governor’s house.  That is located on the same hill. There was also extensive damage to the second floor during the 2017 hurricane season so that portion of the house is no longer available to the public.

It was an enjoyable stop not just because of the history but also because of the items of normal history, extensive maps, and the gardens.

We had an early departure. Part of my evening wound up being a “meal with an officer.” It was definitely not impressive. Table in the back of one of the smaller standard restaurants with the regular menu….

Back to stitching….

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!
