the prickers are back

In case you don’t remember what a prickly pear looks like in its cactus form –

this is the one that is budding like mad in Dani & Alex’s front garden. Green when not ripe – and you can barely see one that is ripening up in the corner. They have all those prickles. What I found out today is that I didn’t get them all out so that it is back to the tweezers as more of the blasted things work their way out of my fingers.

It is so not fun.

Meanwhile, I finished the next Zodiac Girl in Nora Corbett’s series. Here she is – minus only about 200 beads, 100 stitches and a world of backstitching..

the stitching includes the 600+ stitches of Kreinik (gold metallic thread which twists, frays and is a real pain). As I finish each month, if it is early, I might just go back and get the Kreinik done… and get it out of the way.

And, most importantly – today is George’s actually birthday. We celebrated yesterday because weekends are easier on everyone. So today it was quiet. He even got the following birthday greeting:

The dogs are posed, not photoshopped; treats were involved. Saiorse is the German shorthair, Gwen, the golden retriever and Mako the vizsla.

2018, when George turned 70 was the last time we had a major birthday celebration for him. The following summer he was restricted to home and no visitors while we waited to see if his stem cell transplant would take (it didn’t). And I don’t have to tell you about 2020 or 2021.

I think I am adjusting to the new normal. Sort of. Maybe. Perhaps.

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!
