Still working on the wall

I mentioned, didn’t I, that we were having some retaining walls repaired. Other than a couple of places, nothing had been done to any of them for years and years. Which means long before we moved in. Everything was fine and dandy till about a year ago when a lot of rain resulted in over saturated soil behind the differnet sections. Turns out that there wasn’t any way for drainage. End result? The wall started bowing out, cracked in more than a few places and just plain fell apart.

We live on a hill, or more accurately, on the side of either an very large hill or a small mountain – take your pick, it really doesn’t matter. What is important is that, unlike in the level parts of the area, we just don’t have that much depth to the top soil.

Standing near the edge of the parking pad and looing down, you get the idea.  You can also see the start of the rebuilt holding wall on the right –

with it being rebult. There are rocks, large stones, cement built up against a form with newly packed dirt behind and a drainage chanel at that base. It is hard, heavy work which has the crew has been acomplishing in spurts worked in between their other jobs with breaks due to rain as a result of yet another atmospheric river.  I figure if that first wall lasted somewhere between 40-70 years (not sure exactly when it was put in), this replacement is going to outlive me….

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!
