SFO – USO

It rained last night and into this morning. We looked at each other and decided to ask Dani for a ride to BART as it was on her way to work. Admittedly, it would mean leaving earlier than we had planned, but avoided attempting either the bus or Lyft. Since we were packed last night, it only took a few minutes this morning of re-arranging things and trying not to forget anything (but I am sure that I have).

Rechecking the Turkish Airlines packing information – no nail files, no scissors, no…. Hello? Cross stitch supplies here. Seam ripper can function to cut threads and I doubt that it is going to raise any eyebrows. Folded scissors. We will see what happens… (and for those who are interested – I packed three things that are just about cohmplete. Unpacked a number of projects that will need too much concentration. Added a number of small (60×60) patterns so that I can feel like I am making progress….

So here I am at the airport – sitting in the new, lovely and clean USO lounge. It is located upstairs above the check-in at Terminal 1. You can’t get here by elevator, but there is an escalator. The lounge is pretty much empty. Not much for military stationed around here – so it primarily serves to support those changing planes here from the Far East, heading to the Far East (Philippines, Korea, Japan), the rare person from Travis Air Force Base, and the hodgepodge of locals. Since the Oakland Naval Air Station closed in 1961 the remaining active force here has been Coast Guard (who now belong to Homeland Security). In case you were wondering what happened to that particular piece of property and history – it is now knows as the Oakland International Airport.

George easily checked in through United (although the amount of paperwork it took was amazing – passport, boarding documents, immunization proof, Spanish entry, Portugal entry….) So I decided to see if it really was that hard to fill out the Spanish Health App. Nope – less than five minutes. All you needed was passport information, flight information, location in Spain. Gives me a QR code which will get me into Spain along with my Vaccine card…

My next report in will be from the Turkish Airlines Lounge in Istanbul (after a very, very long flight….)

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!
