Sea Day #3 – Rock & Roll – Star Legend

Having sailed on more large ships than small, I forget how reactive to wind and wave are the smaller ships. The height of waves that would not budge a any ship sailed by Norwegian, Royal, MSC are causing this particular vessel to bob and weave along with it’s forward momentum.

In the middle of this, I was contacted by the front office to inform me that I could move early to my new cabin… Huh? The cabin that your home office emailed me about that I would have for both legs of the trip? That one? Turns out it has been vacant this past leg and they were never informed…. So that is on me, I should have brought the email to their attention days ago.

OTOH – we were on Deck 4 in around the center of the ship. It was incredibly stable. Not so my new location on Deck 5. We are four cabins back from the bow of the ship and I can really feel the movement. Certainly a huge amount more than I notice even going down to Deck 3. Deck 3 is where the med center is located. We all experienced the swab up the nose again since the Portuguese authorities require testing on everyone who is entering Portugal.

I didn’t include this particular photo yesterday. I needed time to think about it. As we came down the mountain in the gondolas, there were a few, rare buildings that were falling down. Something that I found unexpected. The land is limited and I would have expected rebuilding. Whether directly or from sale of the property and someone else building fancy and new.   –

but traveling over several buildings with no roofs, walls standing and vegetation well started inside took me back to more than one helicopter flight in the Balkans. One of the major ways to force out neighbors during the Balkan Conflict was to force out the family at gun point, turn on the gas, close al the windows and doors, followed by leaving candles burning in the attic. The build up of natural gas would happen, the house would explode and burn, leaving only walls…

Sometimes mental connections aren’t always positive. I think it is time to take a nap…

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!
