Radiance OTS – harbor seals

Now, it seems that just about all the cruise lines that come into San Pedro list the port stop on their itineraries as Los Angelas. The cruise portion of the port is listed as the “World Cruise Center” which is a bit of an exaggeration, Considering that both Miami & Fort Lauderdale are capable of accommodating a significantly higher number of cruise ships on a daily basis.

Anyway – back to the discussion of San Pedro which was an independent city  swallowed up by L.A. back in 1909. (Learned something new from Wiki all the time).  Over the decades, the main industry has swung from fishing to port operations, becoming one of the largest and busiest international shipping ports. You don’t really see the extent from the water – but you certainly do if you have misfortune of driving to the port during the week. Anyway, I have been here before, most recently last February with Shana & Lev.

If interested, you can always watch the port goings on – just look for Webcam – Los Angeles  Port.

Otherwise, the view isn’t all that interesting –

If you don’t have a fascination for large cargo ships, cranes, and the occasional small boat coming through there are always harbor seals.

Are seals in a harbor called harbor seals by location or definition? Or are harbor seals a specific species? Inquiring minds wanted to know after walking out on my balcony after docking. Looking down – I found myself starting directly into the face of a seal just quietly paddling along the side of the ship on its back. It looks at me, I looked at it and ran for my phone/camera. It was gone in the few seconds it took me to grab it and return to the railing.

I didn’t feel up to a trip off the ship today. The traffic can be horrible. I have toured the USS Iowa in the past and there is not that much that is close and safely walkable from my perspective.

Witches Cabinet – (WitchesGardenCrafts) which is my Halloween Stitch this year

and Tea Rex – as far as I can easily go till I restock DMC 817…

But I really like the Dino.

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!
