Oregon State 66, Cal 56

It was not a great night for the Cal Women’s Basketball team. It wasn’t that they weren’t active and out on that court. It was more that they just weren’t sinking the baskets.

Why am I telling you this? Senior tickets (when they are available) to the men’s games are ~$18. It cost $5 to buy a ticket to the women’s game. Besides, to be honest, the women look like they are having more fun. Yes, the game is taken seriously but there isn’t some announcer talking potential and scouting and distracting all of us from watching the play on the floor.

With tickets in general admission, our choices were wide open on either end of the arena. I could have easily lived without the cheerleaders. I mean, really. What in the world does one need with six (yep, 6) skinny long haired girls wiggling around with pom-pons. On the floor are two teams of serious athletes while on the sideline are ladies specializing in hair twirling… The half-time entertainment consisted of dancing out on the court by just about any one (mostly kids) who wanted to be there.

kids doing their own dance thing

But I digress. The other fun thing was the Cal Straw Hat Band. Yes, as you guessed it – they wear straw hats along with vests covered in pins and buttons.

The Straw Hat Band

and some of the hats – which are obviously personal choice

George and I had a good time and probably will go to more of the home games. I’m thinking the only game where the attendance will be significant would be the Cal-Stanford game later this year. Sorry to say, but I think there will probably be more Stanford supporters than Cal.

On the other fronts – the Klimt Virgins is done

and the final with my choosing to replace a few of the original color choices

As is Bill’s Hat.

warm hat knit of merino sock wool. Goes in the mail tomorrow….

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!

Mmmm – very much like the look of the hat and the way the colours turned out. It’s also very sensible and very practical – love it when they are deep enough to cover the ears twice!

    • Holly Doyne says:

Yes, I decided for Colorado it would be better to knit the full hat rather than just the quick beanie version (20 cm before the crown decrease rather than ~12)

  2. Janet says:

Now you know why I go to minor league hockey games. Much more fun and lots, lots cheaper…

  3. Vicki says:

t amazes me how quickly you finish projects! You are amazing!

    • Holly says:

Well, it is not like I am working for a living at the present. And with four others in the house, I am currently NOT playing the mom….

  4. Brad says:

I would have been in the band, and having a ball.

  5. Cheryl says:

How do you knit and cross stitch so fast?! That is amazing!

  6. Bill says:

    Oh boy oh boy. ?

    • Holly says:

and the plan is to get it in the mail today (if the rain ever reasonably lets up). If it fits, I might even knit you a second one…

  7. Ann says:

$18? OK, how ycome we have to pay $100 each to see UCLA at Pauley Pavilion? We’ve opted for TV and comfortable seats with cheap food and no bouncing long haired glamour lovelies.
BTW we have a grandson at Cal. – a real political talented actor. I hope he will follow my lead in political science.
The Klimt is stunning. You must have 20/20 vision.
    Regards to George.

  8. Holly says:

I’m thinking part of the price is because private funds built practically the entire sports complex @ Cal. Less money to make up from the paying fans. OTOH – this is Berkeley.

Thanks for the compliment on the Klimt – and no – I don’t have anywhere near 20/20. But I was using 11 count canvas, great light and the more than occasional magnifying glass!

  9. Mitch says:

I had no idea that your and George were such sports fans. We have been following NCAA women’s basketball for about 20 years, longer than the WNBA. Gottlieb at UC Berkeley had a good team a couple years back, but no team in the Pac 12 has yet to approach Stanford.

    • Holly Doyne says:

Mostly it is me. And I enjoy seeing games live. No tolerance for watching anything on the tube.

  10. Pat says:

    The Virgins is absolutely beautiful.
