New Lanark

was a bit of a drive this morning. But with the relatively small sized group, it would have been possible to spread out more in the bus. OTOH, with everyone hanging near the front there is limited need for shouting or use of microphones.

Ok – New Lanak which is not to be confused with Lanark altho both are located in Lanarkshire. New Lanark, founded in the late 1700s is obviously nowhere near old enough to be in the Doomsday Book. The link above will take you to Wiki.

This particular town was purpose built on the Clyde River to take advantage of water power at the only location of waterfalls along the river for a cotton mill. Cotton, as you might guess, is not exactly native to this area, but close enough to the port of Glasgow to accept cotton shipments first from the colonies and after from several southern US States.  The mill finally went out of operation in 1968.  I am not going to go into the long involved history of utopian planning, early socialism, and mandatory education of children under the age of 10 before allowing them in the workforce. You can read about it either on Wiki directly or under Robert Owen

After going through the mill, we took a walk along the footpath next to the river before being served tea. Being it was the middle of the day, we saw neither badger, otter, or fish in the river for that matter. The river seemed extremely low. Tea? Well the tea was strong, I am not particularly a fan of white bread small sandwiches with unidentifiable fillings but the sweets were fine.

I dozed a bit on the ride back. Like most other trips in this area, 40km takes quite a while to traverse. Tonight is our last night in Glasgow, we move on in the morning. I napped most of the afternoon which doesn’t bode well for getting some sleep tonight.

Pictures will follow after I get my phone charged and so can down them.

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!
