Mel’s Original Diner

I am sure that there are a lot of Mel’s Diners out there. The one in Pinole (Contra Costa County) here in the east bay is the one that Alex (son-in-law) and I have been going to every week or two for breakfast. I am not exactly sure how many years we have been doing this. Certainly long enough that our favorite waiter just motions us to his section, asks us if we want water & coffee. Of course we need water and coffee. What we actually don’t need are menus since we both are consistent in our selections.

Oh – excuse me – this is an Original Mel’s Diner. I am sure that there is a trademark involved. Anyway, I have provided you with a link. Looks like there are a number of them in and around the Bay area. This particular one offers a drive through (no car hops) and runs 24/7.  It is always more than I can eat, so brought 1/2 of my french toast home.

We ran a few errands then I came home and have been ensconced in a comfortable chair, stitching. There might have been a zoom meeting followed by a face time chat. Mostly I have been forcing fluids and cursing my cough.

I did have a new start – after all this is a new year. I chose this particular patter – The Peacock Tree by Modern Folk Embroidery before I came up with my new roll’em plan. The fabric is 18 ct Countess from Forbidden Fiber Co and the floss is #12 pearl from Threadworx. This is about 550 stitches in. The top border is 1/2 way across.

tomorrow is another day of errands in SF. After that, I should be free of the city until the end of next week.

Are we having fun yet?

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!
