La Rambla
It is evening in Barcelona. The weather is mild at a simple 16C. The minimal showers of much earlier in the day have completely stopped. I don’t think there is anyone under forty who is not out in the city tonight. The outdoor cafes are packed, the sidewalks flowing with pedestrian traffic as the locals eddy around clots of obvious tourists confusedly attempting to read menus.
There are cafes, Tapas Bars, restaurants, grills and a number of places that are just not easily definable. Couples window shop while young professionals hurry to meet friends. Grandparents haul toddlers promising them that “mamma and papa are right up ahead.”
I arrived safely in Barcelona on AirBerlin via, of course, Berlin. Even with flight delays, it was still bright outside arriving on a plane loaded with Gymnasium students on some kind of outing. Now, in Berlin Tegel you have to climb stairs into the aircraft. To make the process go faster, they place access and open doors both fore and aft. Barcelona is a real airport with a jetway. Once I finally convinced the giggling gaggle that they needed to turn around, face front, and either get off or get out of the way, we were all fine.
There is much to see and buy at the airport. I made a look through Desigual but restrained myself even tho I heard all about their shoes from Maus.
I am staying at a little gem of a hotel – Praktik on La Rambla just a couple blocks from Placa de Cataluna. Known for its interesting architectural design, this former private home has been converted into a series of elegant rooms, single chambers with modern furnishings, free wifi, and a French window that opens into an private tiny interior tiled courtyard.
If you want to try webcams – you can go here. I don’t have the bandwith here at the hotel to mess around.
