Just counting

As I was sitting here this afternoon – I starting thinking about my old tag line from Cruise Critic –

400 + nights at sea – too bad they aren’t all on the same cruise line

which is obviously and patently no longer true, the nights I mean. It is more than 400 nights over the years still certainly not on the same line but the differences have been interesting. So I decided to see if I could add them all up. First – there are the Rivers which I decided to count since they qualify both as ships and water –

2000 – Donau
2007 – Yantzee
2008 – Nile
2014 – Donau (Phoenix)
2017 – Columbia & Snake – American Queen Steamship

which I guess leaves me the Amazon, Mekong & Volga as rivers I would seriously like to cruise.

On the high seas – the first ship we were on was 2004 – Costa something in the Baltic the summer after I returned from a lovely 15 months in Kuwait and related garden spots. Since then – I think it has been Costa x 4 total (One TA), MSC x 3 (2 TAs), Celebrity x 9 (1 transpacific, 1 Panama), Royal x 56 (14 TAs, 1 Circumnavigation of Australia and NZ, Panama, 1 TransPacific, 2 Suez), NCL x 15 (1 TA, 2 Panama). Then there are the One of’s. Princess, La Ponant, P&O, Phoenix, Crystal (TA). I think that adds up to around 92 cruises.

The reason that I noted the TransAtlantics, TransPacifics, Panama and Suez is that they average 14 days. That is around 275 days right there. Even if the other 65 ocean cruises were 7 days each plus the rivers it puts me over 900 nights.

Perhaps I will change the tag line when I hit 1000?

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!

Right, just catching up on all this – they have not been coming through for some reason. It is difficult to comprehend spending all that time at sea.
You might have sent some of that snow down here by the way. I am currently sitting in a “sauna” – or that is what it feels like!

Any chance of the adventure that is Stitches West this year? It’s coming up next week.

    A very impressive list!

Have you thought about cruising French Polynesian on the Aranui 4/5?

Two different very experienced world travelers have told us that it was by far the best trip they’d ever been on.

I am more likely to take Windstar around Costa Rica. I really don’t have any burning desire to go to French Polynesia. I’ve been through Papeete, and Bora Bora. Other than the diving….
