Given the vagaries of the US Government, rules and orders it should not surprise any of you that I have to fly back to the UK in order to travel to Ft Benning. Something about having to leave and return from my permanent duty station.
End result is that I will get to spend the night with one of my two really good friends tonight before heading right back to Heathrow in the morning.
Ft Benning is not going to be happy with me, and it should be quite interesting. You see – they want people to arrive in order to sign in by 0900 on Saturday. Most weeks it would not be that much of an issue, but I was not interested in traveling on Rosh Hashanah. Leaving a week earlier would not work since I wasn’t back from Australia. And in any case, the normal departure on the contract flight is on Fridays. Since this coming Friday is Yom Kippur, “es kommt nicht in Frage.”
I have a feeling that they are not going to want to keep me for a full extra week so will probably being leaving on a commercial flight sometime early next week. Given the amount of gear I have to drag along, this is not all that much of an advantage. (Something around three duffel bags and a rucksack plus my carry-on).
Boy, this sounds impractical! I know, there has to be a good reason
why the rule was made, and the Army is notorious for inflexibility.
And during the high Holy Days. Good grief.
Das is gut!
