Drinks Packages are not a good idea

At first I was going to tell you about the absolutely best meal I have had on board. It was last night’s dinner in the Solarium Bistro.

This location isn’t huge, but serves a good variety of breakfast & lunch selections in a casual, comfortable location (easy walk from where we hang out) with an excellent staff. But dinner – ah! The menu is fixed and features what they call Mediterranean. Frankly, I would term it more Mid-East, tossing in Greece & Turkey for good measure.

Salads – baba ganoush, tabouli, hummus, olives, pita bread. Real pita bread.  and for veg – grilled vegetables, falafel ..
there was fish, lamb, and chicken. And baklava for desert. also flan, but I didn’t try it.

It was amazing. The food had FLAVOR (hate to say it, but apparently the chefs are catering to a presumed lack of interest in anything spicy or flavorful Boring. really boring to this point).  and

which leads me to today.  The three of us – Jill, Graeme & I have pretty much found a lovely place to sit each day. This morning was fine. This afternoon? I wound up deciding that an audiobook on headphones was the way to go.

Why?

A group plunked themselves down in the seating area directly behind me. Varying from four to seven people, they all had drinks packages. Obviously if you have paid for drinks packages, you need to drink your money’s worth, right? As you can probably guess, starting around noon and getting steadily louder, I had had it by 1430-1500. Drunk, loud and no where near as funny as they thought they were. I am not that great at estimating ages, but would guess 30-40s as guesstimate. And not going to even bother with mentioning their country of origin.

As a medical type, I don’t like those kind of alcohol packages as they encourage people to drink. Getting your money’s worth as I heard one of the group say.  As a fellow cruiser – I absolutely hate them. It encourages stupid behavior and decreases inhibitions which creates problems for everyone around the idiots. Best thing RCCL ever did was decide to limit the amount of free drinking that goes with their upper loyalty tiers.

Off soap box.

In spite of everything – it was a good stitching day – I finished Bonkers

and then started and finished Part 8 of the Haunted Library.

if you have made it this far – today’s elevator picture!

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!

One Response to Drinks Packages are not a good idea

  1. ron says:

I’ve been on two TUI cruises were everyone could drink as much as they wanted of whatever they wanted, from beer to Long Island Ice Teas, as long as it didn’t come in a fancy bottle.

I was expecting frequent encounters with loud drunks, but in all those weeks, I never saw anyone even seriously tipsy, much less loud and drunk.

I have no explanation for this.
