Day 2 – Poll Worker

And it was another technical 9-5 day. Not counting the fact that we need to be there an hour prior for set up and an hour after for tear down. Specifically, there are things we can leave up overnight. But that doesn’t include anything that is even remotely electronic.

There were a few more people voting today, plus a lot more dropping off their “mail in ballots.” It is actually the best way to do the mail in as those sealed envelopes get picked up by the courier overnight and the post office is not involved.

George was off to a wedding today which meant that he could drop me off, but I was on my own once again to get home. Unlike the AC Transit Buses #65 & 67 which don’t run on weekends, the #6 runs seven days a week between Oakland and the Berkeley BART station. It just happens to travel along Telegraph Avenue complete with a bus stop at the corner of Stuart & Telegraph which puts it only a 100 meters from the polling station.  Taking the bus eliminated both the hike along Telegraph and the trek through campus. Instead, I could easily walk up Oxford which is a gradual uphill, a block on Vine, again gradual, along Spruce leaving me only the last five blocks which were really UPHILL…

And it took about the same amount of time as last night but I wasn’t quite as wiped. Go figure. Tomorrow is just like today, then Tuesday will be really, really long.

And yes, we actually do get paid. It isn’t all that much but better than Jury Duty pay.

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!

Our media is giving this almost as much courage as one of our federal elections. The outcome is going to have a big influence here – one way or another!

    Do they feed you?

    What about free coffee?

  3. Holly says:

No food, no free coffee. But I stopped and picked up a very large flavored Latte on the way in. I figured I would need both the caffeine and the sugar.
