Considering the last ten days or so

We managed the last sea day – took little time to pack. We both felt under the weather but were bound and determined to NOT looks sick and make it safely home. Means we wore masks. Good Masks. All the time. George wasn’t thrilled. I didn’t care.

Short summary – we docked at 0800 or there about and by the time the immigration folks were done faffing about, I was glad we’d booked a private car with a flight at 1300. One other couple – with an 1130 flight – had done the same.

We left Melbourne on summer’s solstitce – longest sunniest day of their year at 1300 on 21 Dec. We landed at SFO on 21 Dec at 0820 in the morning (yes those dates are correct) and finally had a gate about 0900. Immigration wasn’t a problem, our luggage showed up promptly and we headed straight to BART.

Miriam picked us up and I think we wiped out after that. Oh wait – we attempted to go the Cal Women’s Basketball game. Made it through ½ before I really needed sleep. Still wearing masks. Winter Solstice, dark as all get out way too early.

I started coughing more over the next few days along with a serious fever (39.4*C) shaking chills and the rests. I finally went in and was seen on the 26th. Wasn’t dying so handed antibiotics and let loose. Went home to keep everyone awake for the next few nights till things calmed down.

Still coughing. Getting really bored with coughing. No energy and no willingness to be in public.

(whine, whine, whine).

Lousy way to end a year.

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!
