Closets

Some people’s closets are nice, neat, organized, and come complete with a door to close them off from view.  My closet can be best described as needing to be excavated on a good day and perhaps deserving of a match on a bad. Dealing with it has been put off for just about forever.  Seriously, it has been a longer than I want to admit.

The first problem is that I actually use an extremely limited wardrobe consisting of tunics, leggings, t-shirts, jeans, and a few shirts. Oh, and three leather jackets.

I don’t remember the last time I wore a good dress, skirt, or fancier. Probably pre-pandemic. Certainly not in the last few years. But, like many of my generation, the thought of getting rid of perfectly good clothes that I might possibly need again in the future is abhorrent. Especially since I don’t go for style or fashion, Classics last forever, right?

And then there are the “special environment” clothes – tan & white for Africa; long underwear and winter weight for cold climates. Again, neither of which I have needed in the past five years. But, since I haven’t rules out heading to severely hot or cold climates – it would seem stupid to give them away. Plus, especially with the cold weather gear – exactly no one here would want it. Thrift store in Lake Tahoe perhaps?

And lastly – there are all the sweaters I have knit over the years of which I have worn exactly two in the last few years…

Now I just need to excavate the bottom of the closet. And what DO I do with the bin of A’s Logo gear?

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!

I know you own more clothes than I do (all that sweater and sock knitting for a start) but I assure you it is possible to manage without a single dress in your wardrobe….or at least I do!
