Cabin Upgrade

When I booked this trip – which was when it was first released – I looked at the deck plan, looked at prices, looked at the ship size and decided that Deck 3 was where I wanted to be. Especially since the cabins on Deck 3 were mid ship. Yes, that is the boarding deck for the tenders, but there are no tender ports on this trip so it didn’t see like much of a noise risk. Also, frankly, small ships go more slowly than the large ones and seem to bounce in the waves a bit more.

I hadn’t looked at my documents until a day or so before leaving. Cabin 605 it said. Now, since I had booked 308, obviously this was a change. Yes, I was surprised. Yes, I have status on this cruise line, but know that there were multiple other people on board with more. The higher up in the ship, the more movement. Same with being forward. Ok – I don’t get sea sick unless things are so bad that it is crawling on along the deck, but other people do. I certainly saw that in fall of 2024 coming across the Atlantic and the outer Canadian Maritime provinces.

Anyway – this cabin has a balcony! With chairs that are actually comfortable.

The cabin itself is the usual longer than it is wide. the sitting area and the desk are on the balcony end (which is what I prefer).

The desk has an EU outlet, a mixed outlet, and two old standard USB slots. The mini-bar is under one side of the desk which has two shallow drawers at the top. Some things don’t make sense. The light switch for both the desk and balcony are next to the bed rather than at the desk or veranda door. There isn’t a divider or curtain available to separate the  the sleeping area and desk/couch area. Obviously not an issue for someone traveling alone, but I met a couple of individuals in the lounge this morning who were there because their spouses like to sleep in (and there is no way have a light on in the cabin without it shining on the beds.  Also, I don’t get having a huge TV facing the bed, but then I am not a TV watcher.

Since I am totally time zone whacked – I was up at 0500 dark. There were no lights on the Yacht club which is the lounge forward on Deck 7. I checked at the reception desk – no problems – someone turned on the lights for me. And Cindy (the barista/waitress) handed me a latte shortly after official opening.

The lounge is nice for chatting with random people. There are a couple of knitters, a group attempting to put together a 1000 piece puzzle on a totally inadequate coffee table.

This afternoon’s entertainment was a  retired Navy Captain (specialty oceanography ) who is doing seven lecture on – yes, oceans.

The food has been excellent, my bed comfortable and I finished this –

which I started on flights over. It is about 3k of stitches (I don’t have any white/silver so I am missing a couple of ghosts.)  My other option is just to add in a couple of slightly larger bats… Stitched on 18 ct Aida with Cottage Garden Threads (Hot Pepper) and Threadworx 1040.

First time zone change is tonight. (current time here is 2144)

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!
