Bear Island

It wasn’t planned, but the sun was out today and the Captain made a slight detour of about an hour or two in order to circle Bear Island So named because the polar ice sheet comes this far south (which is really not that far south at all) in the winter. Gives the bears a simple landbridge on which to hike down, walk around and take a nap. Oh, and eat.

The highest number anyone has seen is about 130 bears, which for polar bears seems like an awful lot to me.

Did I saw meanwhile it was a nice biting 2 degrees above freezing standing out on the deck taking photos?

so I will leave you to the harsh beauty. And leave the island to the bears and nesting birds.

Stark and beautiful. The nice thing about the freezing temperature is that you can go home to summer. *:) happy
