Scottsdale, AZ
Looking around this small neighborhood in Scottsdale is somewhat reminiscent of the houses near us when we lived on 28th NW in DC. For some insane reason, everyone paints perfectly good brick.
Am I the only one who likes brick? Nice red, ordinary brick. Honest brick which might show a bit of wear and tear but looks normal, real, not artificial?
There are white houses, cream houses, off-white houses and pink houses. I am leaving off the lavender, puke, tan, brown and weird green colors. Only saw one blue. Most, but not all have matching garages (garage areas).
This is the Southwest. Adobe I could understand, even stucco which essentially has to be painted. But painted brick? Once you paint it, you have to paint it forever. With the heat and blowing sand this is every couple of years for a new coat of paint. Don’t tell me that the outer color of the house is going to have that much influence on the inner temperature – especially not the difference between brick red and mud brown.
Guess it just must be personal taste, but it is likely a step above aluminum siding…..
(off tonight for San Francisco and temperatures about 20 degrees C cooler….)
I love brick. Nice red, ordinary brick. Preferably the darker colors, such as maroon, wine, more commonly found in the northeast. I can’t imagine why anyone would paint brick.
Guffawed at that last line. And totally agree with the sentiment.
This is why we have unpainted brick and look askance at the house next door which is leprous, peeling, once-white, painted brick.
Ordinarily I agree with you about painted brick. There is, however, one house on Layhill that has striping in the bricks. It is right at the intersection of Layhill and East Gate. Everyone I have talked to who hates painting brick thinks painting that brick would be a merciful thing!
I used to watch Curb Appeal, a program about improving the outside of your house. They always painted the brick, which seemed odd to me. I totally agree…why add more maintenance to your home?! So, maybe it’s trendy.
‘m with you….real brick, no paint. But then…I have a riiculous fondness for both brick and stone walls…
Did you mean puce? Puke might be appropriate, too.
No, I actually did mean puke – as in bad paint job with multiple colors spotted and peeling
