The boys are back

in town….. remember that song? If not – it is probably because you are too young. The original song was released in 1976 …. oh, dear, that is 50 years ago,,,

In this case, the song starts playing in my head every fall when the young bucks start invading our yard. For most of the year, it is does, does + fawn, and occasionally a small herd of yearlings without adult supervision. But come September, the first sign of fall is the return of the boys.

I noted the first one about a week ago when Onyx was sitting in the TV room window and yelling at someone. That someone turned out to be a six-point buck calmly lying on top of the retaining wall which put him at almost eye level with the cat. Said cat was obviously taking offense at the presence of that much larger creature on HIS territory.

Unlike the does and fawn, the boys seem to hang out up against the fence on higher ground. When I came up the stairs, two of them were standing right there on the patio. I informed them I was headed into the house and I didn’t care if they hung out. Once in, I promptly walked through to the deck door and looked up the hill on the side of the house

to see one of the two young bucks looking back at me. I informed him, again, that I didn’t care if they hung out. In truth, I much prefer the does and fawns – and seeing the young ones grow over the summer.

Guess who just got back todayThem wild-eyed boys that had been awayHaven’t changed, had much to sayBut man, I still think them cats are crazy

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!
