Facing Phoenix

Holly Doyne Posted on 2009-05-31 by Proseknitic2009-05-31

After hauling this particular sweater from the UK though Germany to Hungary and back, it seemed like I really should finish it. I mean, after all, I have been knitting it (or avoid it) for months now. Admittedly, not as long as I diddled around with the Viking Ship Sweater, but certainly I should not leave it till next winter, now that it is too warm to wear it.

Remember that the sleeves were finished and set it. So it was a matter of deciding on the edging. After thinking about it – I decided to avoid both I-cord and ribbing. This, obviously left me with needing an edging that would create a nice, clean edge and cover up those steeks. I also decided that I did not want color variation in the edging, so using dark grey seemed the safest bet.

What follow is the step, by insane step, method that I used.

1) find long enough needle on which I could put the 165 stitches from each side of the front plus all those around both fronts and backs of the neck

going to the dark side

going to the dark side

then there is a long time of knitting in one direction and purling back (remembering to increase on the two neck corners so that they will be mitered at the end) while taking the occasional look at the inside.

facing and bit of steek

facing and bit of steek

In the next picture, I was checking to see if the facing was long enough yet. You can also see the line of yarn on the inside that represents all the stitches that have been picked up to make the facing. I will come back and pick these up at the end to complete the bind off on the inside.

not quite long enough yet

not quite long enough yet

when the facing is wide enough, I inserted a purl row for a turning row, then knit an equal width of facing which will be turned to the inside. When it is bound off, it will enclose the steeked edge.

close up

close up

might be a bit easier to see here. The top edge is bound off, the lower edge shows the open facing completel with the purl row. That faint bit of blue is actually the cable from this particular circular needle .

finishing up the neck

finishing up the neck

I just have some sewing down to complete around the neck in those places that were “steek free” plus a few lose ends to weave in.

almost done

almost done

Like I said, a few threads and then some badly needed blocking as soon as I pull out the woolly board.

Couple of thoughts for those who don’t believe that Kauni needs to be knit at 24/10 cm. I knit this at a much firmer gauge since I had no desire for a garment that was forever around. The result of taking out almost 20 cm? It is firm, it is heavy. and the hand is not as nice as my non-rainbow cardigan. A couple of projects that are in the queue are going to be put back to a lighter gauge as they are not outer, outerwear.

on to Budapest

Holly Doyne Posted on 2009-05-24 by Proseknitic2009-05-24

In the usual fashion of the cheap traveler, the shortest distance between Frankfurt and Budapest is via München. Yes, it takes longer. Yes, there is an additional take off and landing involved; but it saved almost 200€. I can buy a lot of yarn for 200€. For that matter, the savings are almost enough to pay this four day hotel bill.

This morning the DH dropped us (me en route to Budapest and the two (Ms Soprano and my college roomie) headed back to the States) off at the airport. Three passangers are cheaper by car as long as you have the kind, long suffering husband to do the drop off.

I didn’t bother with pictures either of or from Frankfurt. But München? Why not!

Audio Books

First I listened to Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell  Me….. before finishing Asimov’s Naked Sun. Then it was time to figure out what to hear next.

After listening to a few minutes of this and that – I settled for non-fiction. Pultizer Prize New York Times columnist Thomas L Friedman‘s Longitudes and Attitudes. This collection includes both selected column’s and diary records from the period shortly before and then after 11 Sept 2001. He is articulate and thought provoking even if you don’t subscribe to his politics.

Distractions

Holly Doyne Posted on 2009-05-11 by Proseknitic2009-05-11

I know I should be taking more pictures of Scherezade. I finished the first half, complete with the edging and the first chart pair of the second side. I am now well into the second chart pair; leaving me the third, part of the fourth, the fifth and the sixth to go. I have eliminated almost a full chart from both sides in an attempt to make it a more reasonable length (daughter’s request).

At this rate, I should be on to blocking this weekend.

Meanwhile (grin), I took a detour to the second Phoenix sleeve, picking both a different chart portion and a different color.  The color changes are both the yarn and the lighting.

the sleeves

I like the cuffs –

which are bound off with both strands to give a slightly firmer control. I also knit them fairly firmly so that they are not floppy, nor will they particularly push up.  If I have calculated properly, they are going to be too small around for any of my wonderful daughters to poke their lovely paws through.

Audio Books

Moving on to Haunted – Kelley Armstrong. This is Book 5 (as I remember) of her Women of the Otherworld series. I read them all a while ago. The narrator is doing a credible job and I am enjoying how well Armstrong has dropped hints of character twists, relationships,  and turns for later novels.

Reprise

Holly Doyne Posted on 2009-05-10 by Proseknitic2009-05-10

You remember Phoenix, right?

It must be almost a month since I had it out, busy being distracted by other projects. It is now my reward knitting.

I looked at the cuff recommendations. Once I got over the error in the book (staring with 50 stitches for a 48 stitch cuff) I decided I didn’t like the recommended portion of the pattern anyway. I wanted something that I liked.

Taking a bit from the final of the four charts, and deciding that the cuffs were not going to match –

Phoenix head

which is almost impossible to see from your direction. But when I look at it from mine, it is just fine.

As you also might have guessed, Scheherazade is on the needles again. Now that it needs to be completed in the next two weeks I don’t have much excuse……

Dime Store Magic – Kelley Armstrong

And no, I did not clean house, pick up or do laundry. Maybe tomorrow……

Making Tracks

Holly Doyne Posted on 2009-04-28 by Proseknitic2009-04-28
new tracks

new tracks

When I was a teenager, there were railroad tracks. Since there were only freight trains coming along these tracks, you could walk along them most of the time. Balancing on the rail or hopping from tie to tie, it was cheap entertainment and often a short cut.

Moving to Europe was a shock. You don’t wander along railroad tracks, not in a country where those trains are electric. They simply don’t make a lot of noise and can sneak up on anyone who grew up listening to the loud sound of engines.

Have you noticed that railroad ties are no longer wood? Well, at least in Germany they are no longer wooden slabs. Intellectually I have known this for a long time but really had not paid a whole lot of attention till I was hanging out at the train station on Saturday and staring at the track. With the train late, there was little else to entertain me.

each one is marked

each one is marked

I think they might just be sturdier. Each and every one had an individual numbers which I am assuming relates to date of placement. Given an reasonable record keeping, it should be easier to manage replacement time.

Now, I know that you would rather look at a nice tree

or the fact that I have finally put together the second sleeve – and am still facing the issue of cuffs…..

9 April – 11 years ago

Holly Doyne Posted on 2009-04-09 by Proseknitic2009-04-09

It was 11 years ago that I boarded a bus bound for the Balkans to spend 6 months heading a medical task force.

Think back. The Serbians, Bosnians and Croatians had pretty much finished blowing each other up, leaving the countryside full of burned out houses and the fields littered with mines. The initial NATO action had lasted over a year and we were now into the Stabilization Force.

Passover was just a few days ahead and I would be spending it in Taszar, Hungary with a detour to Budapest for the Seder.

I started an email list to family and friends in that time period after FidoNet, but before Yahoo groups, or the WWW being widespread. When LISTSERV was considered really good software and no one had been hit with VISTA.

For the next six months, I will inflict the occasional entry on you. Partly for the contrast and a bit because the world has changed so much in the last 11 years.  For those of you who read these the first time around – please feel free to move on to the knitting portion.

On the Road to Bosnia – 9 April 1998

Update –

Had everyone at the departure location by 1330 yesterday; spent the afternoon doing briefings, drawing weapons, and doing last minute running around on post.

We loaded up the buses right after supper and rolled at 1900. This is a lonnggggg drive—trust me.

At 22:30 received the word that Bus number 5 of six broke down. It and Bus 6 were to wait for a new bus, and would be about 1 1/2 hours behind us. Rest stop at 22:30, rest stop at 03:10—nothing like being woken up to go back to sleep. We got in at 7:30. Unloaded all of our gear, set up in tents, got some breakfast, and the last two buses pulled in at 10:00.

So here we are, 124 people sitting, in tents, in the rain, in Hungary. All ok, everyone accounted for. Now to be briefed on the rules of the base and the schedule for the next couple of days while we make plans for the trip south.

More later—but will keep you all posted. You know that I am doing ok and not overworked when I have time to write.

May I mention something for those of you who do not do this often. No, not a glass of wine, but a knitting hint. Most references will tell you to alternate colors in the steek resulting in a checkerboard effect. I keep the colors lined up. This gives me these nice stripes. It also makes it extremely easy to follow columns for both sewing and cutting (see photo above)….. My eyes are not as young as they were and tracing grey all the way down a sleeve is not easy. But following red/orange when in contrasts to grey? Hey, i can do that! In the same way, I use a contrasting thread on the bottom so I can see the stitches.

Nothing Changes

Holly Doyne Posted on 2009-04-06 by Proseknitic2009-04-06

Every week – The Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine puts together a nice summary of the important preventive medicine issues of the week. Plus what ever other interesting articles they find. This weeks HIO-Update

Partway down the first batch of stories – I found this:

IG cites reasons medically unfit are deployed

31 March – Conflicting policies, inaccurate records, and uninformed commanders and medical providers all could play a role in the Army’s deployment of soldiers medically unfit to serve, according to an Army inspector general’s report. It was obtained Monday by Army Times through a Freedom of Information Act request. The report is a response to “numerous Congressional inquiries, media releases and complaints from soldiers and veteran organizations regarding the growing perception that the Army is deploying soldiers to Iraq and Afghanistan who are medically unfit,” the executive summary states. Army Times

Now, why does this not surprise me? My song since 2003.

Stitch Markers

Holly Doyne Posted on 2009-03-27 by Proseknitic2009-03-27

There is something so fun, so appealing about all those bright and shiny dangles. Over the last year, I have collected quite a few and thought briefly about making my own.

I have jewels,

creatures

dragon flies and Loons

dragon flies and Loons

and abstract objects.

And then there are those that I use on a daily basis. They are really simple. They are thin and they have no dangles. There is nothing to get caught in that row, the one below or the one below that. No struggling with a yo increase next to a marker.

I buy another batch every time I place an order with The Loopy Ewe

To be mailed

Holly Doyne Posted on 2009-03-26 by Proseknitic2009-03-26

Packages to Linda, Ruth, Melinda and Angeluna going out in the next couple of days (ok, it might not be till Wed since that is the next time I get to the APO) and I have something shiny for Diana (who spins) which she will get next month when I get back to Germany. I have included the links to the three with blogs. Ruth is an extremely talented lady with a love of tea, Melinda provides a wide variety of book reviews and Angeluna carries the world – as well as participating in Sock Madness this year.

me? I knit another 16 rounds on Phoenix

156 rows complete....

156 rows complete....

which means only five more rows till I start the armhole steeks.

Since I made the mad dash to Croughton today, I have Season 3&4 of CSI:Miami checked out and watched the first disk tonight. Tomorrow I am going to watch the two part Bones (4) in the UK.

I think we all have our favorite types of TV series. I seem to treat them the same way that I treat an author series: when I find an author that I like I go back and read what they have written in the order that they wrote it. I don’t like starting series in the middle. Even worse, I hate cliff hangers. Means that I don’t watch the last episode of anything till the next year’s has started. I like the forensic shows, I haven’t liked a medical show since Trapper John (early 80s). As for those shows which feature an extremely nasty main character (The Office, The Closer), I gave up on them a while ago since no character had the decency to put them out of their misery.

Last Day

Holly Doyne Posted on 2009-03-25 by Proseknitic2009-03-25

(I will finish the spread sheet in the morning, hit the Random Generator (www.random.org) followed by sending off some emails.

So if you get an email from me asking about what color you like, or for a mailing address, please don’t mark it as SPAM…..

Of course, that assumes that this post will load. I managed finally to access the house backup drive. Something about not remembering where I had put the basic log-in information. I stood there in the disastrous remains of the torn apart office and could visualize the booklet in my mind. But not in the office, and not in Ms Soprano’s room (where the router and drive are actually located). Nor in any miscellaneous boxes, shelves or yarn baskets.

I have no clue why I thought that placing it in my nightstand was such a brilliant idea, but there you have it.

Phoenix

Even at just a few rows a night, the Phoenix is steadily growing. 15 more rows and it will be time to start the armhole steeks. The shift from lighter grey to darker seems starker than many of the other changes, but I still like it. I have to admit, the black/red contrast is still my favorite. Might explain why I have picked that combination in stranded work before. Also interesting to note is that I am still working on the first two balls of yarn.

Phoenix - 20 rows on chart 3

Phoenix - 20 rows on chart 3

Future Projects

Been contemplating Katherine from Tudor Roses or, taking the elements and repositioning them in a effort to take the sweater size down to something I might actually wear. It is either that or the Cat Sweater from Norsk Strikk lengthened for an adult. Obviously, no emergency on either one…..

Videos

I just finished watching Season 8 of CSI which lead me to buying the first episode of Season 9. iTunes is really dangerous that way. I could also get Season 4 of Bones, sparing myself the higher expense of buying it. Since I watch everything on my laptop……

Spring is coming, there is a faint haze of green on the Birches near the Farnborough North Train Station. It is a different line than the one that I ordinarily take. No parking near, I met up with another knitter and we hiked to the station past interesting houses

On our way to Reading, we went a bit early so that I could see the two main yarn locations in town. There is a John Lewis of course. If you want Rowan or Debbie Bliss, you can always find it here. But much more fun is Jacksons which is one of those old fashioned stores that carries linens, uniforms, hats, gloves, household goods, foundation garments, sewing and dressmaking supplies. And it carries yarn. Not just some of the fancies, but pattern leaflets and shelfs stuffed with bag lots of yarn. Natural fibers packed in next to high quality acrylics there were some nice bargains which I resisted.

And then there is this interesting building

Meeting in Weinheim

Holly Doyne Posted on 2009-03-07 by Proseknitic2009-03-07

Weinheim is this lovely little town (43K – is that little?) not all that far from Heidelberg. It has this lovely, open, airy library that even has a place where you can sit, chat, knit and have a cup of coffee/juice.

Seems like this was not the greatest day to propose a get together, there were just the two of us (and since I had the camera, I got to avoid my photo being taken).

I joined the “Wicked Eyelet Vest” KAL on Ravelry. Taking yarn out of the stash – Brunswick Impressions Wool that had aged at least 13 years (and wasn’t m*th bit) I started working my way up the back ribbing. It seemed to be too much trouble to convert the pattern to one piece (from three).

The hand warmers are complete and went out in the mail to Ms Soprano this afternoon. Definitely would start the thumb extension lower, perhaps just after the first border and have the finger portions go past the DIP joints. In any case, it took the full 25 grams of the navy (why do you think that the tips on the left hand are white) and I had a couple meters left of the white. Phoenix progress

Holly Doyne Posted on 2009-02-24 by Proseknitic2009-02-24

Addicting, that is what it is. Going round and round and round, seeing the flames starting to rise. Of course, with 300+ stitches in a around, 3.25mm needles and the border including both purl and knit stitches the going has been slow. I am not counting rounds an hour or I would be depressed.  I went ahead and changed locations in the ES (greys) since I wasn’t all that happy with the contrast between what was going to be even paler grey and the yellow/gold. Since it is at the border, it is noticeable, but I kind of like it.
