Searching for storage

No, we don’t need storage space. We have a certain amount – like a unit that needs to be emptied out and the three car garage set up for all that we own. What we don’t have is much of what most people consider standard furniture.

In Germany our bedroom had the short wall full of built ins so that we both had both hanging space as well as shelving plus overhead cupboards for seasonal clothes. Here? We have a closet and I am sharing space with a guy who has a lot of shirts all of which seem to require their own hanger. Not one of those multiple shirt hangers which can fit five shirts into the space of two mind you. No – five shirts means five hangers…. We have no dressers, cabinets or under bed containers.

Today we stopped at The Wooden Duck which is one of several furniture makers in the area specializing in recycling wood (no trees died for your cabinet…..). I had purchased my Evans chest there earlier this month (or was it last) have been really delighted. The end result is that we ordered a couple of items and picked out the finish that we liked. It will be a couple of weeks, but eventually I will be able to put clothing in drawers rather than piles.

Then we went exploring – and discovered –

Z&E Slabs who make the most amazing tables and furniture items. Ian himself gave us a quick tour. And now I know what I want for both coffee and end tables for the living room. And just maybe a replacement for our headboard.

New Pieces Quilt Store which has an amazing selection of fabrics, tools, toys and related printed materials. Their prices are in the same range as Stone Mountain and Daughters with a much larger inventory along with an extremely knowledgable and friendly proprietress. I also discovered some fabric which should due for a couple tops I have been contemplating. Cotton – yes.

And lastly – there is a stained glass artist in the area — Sabrina Frank and I just might save my money for a piece…

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!
