No Kings

As far as I can tell – only one of my grandparents were born in the US. From George’s point of view, his mother was an emigrant, his father born not long after his mother arrived in the US. I have zero English blood, nor does George have any ancestors from that country. Neither of us views royalty with any significant respect. That attitude didn’t change for me while being stationed in the UK. While I saw a couple of the royal family (Princess Anne and Sophie (wife of Edward come to mind) who spent a significant amount of their time in service to others & charities, overall, I wasn’t impressed by royalty in action as performed in the UK, much less the scandals and stupidity exhibited by more than one member of that family. (and if you think I am picking on the UK in specific – just look at what the Belgium King did to “his” properties in Africa including the use of the Belgian military as his private army. Closer to my ancestors – one need look no further than the Russian royalty at the end of the 1800s.

I am not living in a country with a king, I don’t want to live in a country with a king, and I strongly object to anyone in power trying to manipulate the system to make himself wealthy and powerful. Note – the old “healthy, wealthy, and wise” is not being accomplished, just the wealthy portion at the expense.

The U.S. has been standing for 250 years. It has survived earthquakes, fires, floods, hurricanes, terrorists and wars. It has been built on the labor of immigrants. I spent 33 years wearing an Army uniform. I want to continue to be proud of my country and what it stands for. Right now, that is a challenge. So I am staying home today.

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!
