Of course, I got off the ship for a while. Wandered around doing this and that. Unfortunately I made the mistake of going to the post office instead of buying my stamps at a Tabak stand. Almost an hour worth of waiting and the stamp line had not moved. Why ? There was this collector very carefully going through sheet after sheet of stamps and taking out specific singles and blocks of four. At 1130 in the effin’ morning.

I finally decided to just interrupt and wave my numbered ticket for stamps. The civil servant behind the counter did find someone to help me. So all I had to do was wait till the LOL in front of me got finished. Each time I thought she was done she would reach in her purse and pull out another slip of paper. Finally the postal operator told her that he wanted all the slips at once rather than one at a time. What took five minutes for each turned into six and a half for the last fifteen…..

I was next. International stamps are 2€ in Italy where they are under 1€ in the rest of the countries on this trip. You now know why Italy both has expensive postage and no one uses the mails.

A true slice of Italy, where nothing works, yet anything is possible.
