Hybrid Retreats

I might have mentioned that Acorns and Threads kept up hosting on-line retreats post-pandemic when they returned to in person. I think they just might be the only shop doing this. It takes a huge amount of dedication (extra set up, full time person managing Zoom etc). They have it down pretty well.

Over the last four years, between the couple of times a year retreats and the on-line group run by one the members, I have gotten to know several of the people quite well. Yes, there are some younger women, but there are an amazing number of women with in 20 years or so of my age, More than a few of us have retired from full-time employment. The Zoom group is pretty much scattered from the East Coast through to Vancouver Island.  Since the hosting shop is in Portland, Oregon, the time zones work well for me. And frankly, the cost differential between being on zoom vs travel+hotel+meals is significant.  I can do this a couple of times a year and only go to one in person (LA next year). I would have signed up again for Cannon Beach but we won’t be back from Turkey in time (more about that trip later.

This is a retreat with designers – so discussions, patterns, kitted up projects. There is one I might do, but I am getting quite picky about what I start. No intentions of having a to-do list as long as my arm.

Anyway – went on-line at 0830 and finished about 13 hours later (George had just arrived home from his reunion trip.

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!
