Hotel Hesperia Ciutat de Mallorca

It is a litany of small airlines and Charter Agencies: Air Berlin, Tui, Thomas cook, Ryan Air, Condor all lined up and disgorging their passengers into the sunshine and bright lights of the Mallorca airport. That does not mean that there are not regular flights from Swiss Air, Lufthansa or British Airways – just that those staid elders are more than out numbered by the upstarts. Waiting for luggage surrounded by polyglot is nothing compared to have your eyes seared from the contrasting colors and logos of competing tour agencies in the main arrivals hall. Booth after booth is armed with smiling individuals flashing sparkling white teeth, greeting you to paradise and ready to march you out to the vacation of their dreams. Outside, rank upon rank of tour buses are flocked together like parrots with storage wings expanded to accept those who have just finished flights.

I had been booked for a window seat but had moved to the isle on a whim when checking in on line. Turned out to be an error on my part. The afternoon was bright and clear throwing the stony edges of the islands ridges into sharp relief. I will make sure to get photos on the way out – it still should be quite light on the 3rd when we leave.

Not having a clue as to where we would find the hotel – or which bus would get us there – I splurged on a taxi. Turned out to be a good thing. Hotel was booked by George. He said it was right near the harbor and he is right. I should have know – after all – we have two houses, right? Perched on hills they are, one in Heidelberg and the other in Berkeley. Why would it occur to me that the hotel would be easily accessible by something other than a mountain goat or wheeled vehicle?

In his defense, I don’t think he stayed here – I think he just booked it over the internet because it offered one of his favorite statements “a view.” You think I would have learned by now? Anyway, the taxi driver knew where it was and she dropped us right at the door. Could have taken the bus, then dragged self, backpack and wheelie suitcase up the hill…. no, I don’t think so either.

The Mole went out for a hike to scout the area and has found some dinner possibilities all of which are downhill. The hike back should be good for us.

Mallorca—the refuge of Curt Flood when he escaped from controversy and Major League Baseball. Also home to the world’s only school for tour guides every student of which is a gorgeous and healthy blonde Danish girl in her 20’s. Stunning island that. Great bars.

    Sounds lovely.

For some reason Mallorca does not appeal to me so much, but I am very interested in the Azores.

    Go figure.

    Less crowded I guess.

    Have a wonderful time!

I had no clue that it was on a hill. Over the harbor was the operative phrase. Glad you took a taxi. They are very cheap in Spain—that much I knew. Enjoy your stay!

right – over the harbor. As apposed to at the harbor or next to the harbor or …. never mind. There is one hotel that is 50 meters further up the mountain and has more stories. Otherwise = this is a high point…..

Mallorca is wonderful. I have an old farmhouse over the mountains between Banyalbufar and Deia. Peaceful and very beautiful. Used to spend a lot of time there.

Beautiful drive out of Palma is to go east and make a circle. The drive from Porto de Andraitx to Soller, and even further along that northern coast, is stunning. You can cut back over the mountains south to Palma, passing through Valdemossa (Chopin/George Sand).

If you need to move hotels, I’m very fond of the Convent de la Missió in the center of historic Palma, in an old monastary. Although I would stay out of the city.

Hope you have a wonderful time.

Are you on a mission to see how many stamps you can get in your passport by the end of the summer?!

I could do a hill if I was in Mallorca…or some other equally lovely vacation spot. Sitting here in the hot valley with no ocean in sight…
