Day 8 – the final day

Now doesn’t that sound completely dreary? Depressing? Needing a bit of a bracing wind and some sun perhaps?

I spent a goodly portion of today outside on Deck 4. It is the Promenade Deck (as apposed to the Promenade) where you can walk some what sheltered from the wind. It also has a shuffle board painted on the planks in one area and is lined by relatively comfortable lounge chairs. I commandeered one on the non-smoking side of the ship late morning and settled in for several hours of gazing at the sea, attempting to identify other cruise ships within sight (Princess) and knitting.  I managed to finish Chart 4 and start on Chart 5. Of course, even with fewer rows to each chart there is the small matter of constant increases so the rows are getting longer and longer and …..

I also toured the Bridge, saw the back of Studio B (the ice rink), packed my suitcase and tracked down my luggage tags. Since I was offered luggage valet service without charge, it seemed a sensible thing to do on the way home. If my luggage doesn’t arrive at the same time I do – well – I am home.

I’m actually looking forward to being home; sleeping in my own bed. Cleaning the garage, or follow up medical appointments? Not so much.  And I think I am going to have to really hunt for my chocolate covered strawberries. Failing them dropping onto a plate next to my bed, I will settle for the Meyer lemons which are finally ripening.

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!

Welcome home when you get there. There’s no place like home, and one’s own bed.

I’m a bit jealous on the weather. We have the coldest January for thirty years. Today was the first day with temperatures rising above zero.

I did the Neuburger Donauschwimmen yesterday – together with 2250 other peolple – 4 km down the Donau, straight into Neuburg, with 0.6 degrees Celsius water temperature. What we did not have was a strong current, so it took us 80 minutes to get out again, what we did have was lots of broken ice inside the river. Just in case you question it – yes we did wear dry or wet suits as protective clothing…

You are completely insane. Certifiable. And yes, you are definitely a candidate for a hat or two. Color?
