Crash & Crunch

It was yesterday that something went thump/shake into the side of our house on the deck side. I was too tired to think about anything. George checked it out. Apparently one of our redwoods decided it had an excess branch and dropped it on our house. About 15+ cm in diameter and a good 4 meters long (6 inches & 12 feet more or less in old money)

It hit the corner of the house, trashing the rain gutter, taking off the downspout, breaking a bunch of shingles. From there it smashed down on the deck railing so that a whole section is going to need to be replaced.

This is what the corner of the railing should look like

Not this…

and the break continued down the length of the railing along with damage to the base and several of the uprights… Our friendly contractor came to look at the mess about 0800 this morning along with the carpenter/installer who did the deck renovations, window installations etc. It is good to know good, competent people….

After that early start – well actually my early start was 0500 since WHO was providing a webinar (Geneva time…) through their network on the Onchocerciasis  eradication progress in Mali. The link is to Wiki…It is a really nasty disease. Let me just leave it at that.

The Cal Women’s Basketball team was hosting Idaho State at 1100. Turns out this was “School Haas Rock” Day.  Haas is the Pavilion where the games are held, in case you were wondering about the bad pun.  I lost track, but there were kids in attendance from at least 20 of the area’s elementary, magnet, middle, private, and high schools. There were a lot of kids, they made a lot of noise. (frankly this is probably the highest attendance we will see all year).  The Bears won. The kids all seemed to have a great time, especially as the cameras roved the stands anytime there was any significant pause in play.

Heading home. we tried eating at a small Korean restaurant. It was ok, but not enough so to go back. Too salty for my taste.  I spent part of the afternoon stitching –

then when the sunset –

I decided I had enough for the day. Headed to bed early. Unless my computer games hook me in….

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!
