and through the Suez Canal

Holly Doyne Posted on 2017-03-20 by Holly2017-03-21

We may have picked up the pilot around 2300 last night but I certainly didn’t stay awake to find out.

This morning was another matter. That is, if you define morning as anytime after midnight. We pulled anchor about 0345 and were on our way. I had expected actually that we would have started a lot earlier. But there are so many factors that go into starting out the convoy through the canal. Make no mistake about it, it is a convoy. Parts of the canal have two channels, the rest one. So it completely depends on a continuous flow of traffic in both directions managed actively with opposite directions only able to pass in the Great Bitter Lake or where there are two channels. This is similar to other long channels with the exception that this is all sea level – no locks involved.

I’m not going to repeat the history of the canal which dates back to the 1800s. Or two millennium prior to the Common Era depending on whether you want to believe Wiki which is normally pretty reliable or the kindergarten teacher masquerading as a lecturer on ship.  When you look carefully at the early history to include Darius I, it is fairly obvious that they were not looking to connect the Med with the Gulf of Aden but rather to connect the Nile to the Red Sea/ Great Bitter lake to make an East-West passage.

In any case – the canal entrance on the Red Sea end around 0400-0500 in the morning …

followed by what you could see as the sun was coming up.

Our view this time was different than the last two – we were on the right/north/east channel depending on your point of view. So we had a lot of sand. And construction and more sand.

Toward the Suez

Holly Doyne Posted on 2017-03-19 by Holly2017-03-20

You should have heard the complaints all morning when there wasn’t any internet. I mean, seriously? Is it really a crisis if you can’t read a newspaper on a Sunday or play on line poker? Jill and I just shook our heads and kept on stitching.

19 March 2017

Otherwise it was a quiet day punctuated by the usual dance classes, art auctions, bingo and quizzes. And maybe a cheer or two when the techs managed to get the sand out of the receivers and the passenger/crew internet connection back. As far as why we managed to get hit by a sandstorm, the Red Sea is simply not that wide. Having 75+km/hr winds means that they easily make it from the Arabian Peninsula to any ship which is within 40-50 km of their shore.

my view for most of the day

We arrived at the East end of the Suez around 2300…

Sandstorm

Holly Doyne Posted on 2017-03-18 by Holly2017-03-19

About 2000 the Middle East decided to assert its authority. The winds came up and along with it came lower temperatures and sand. Sand on balconies and the outer deck, and, as it turns out, sand in the communications apparatus. Not exactly exciting or comfortable for those who like hanging out on balconies or open decks. Since I have spent a significant amount of time in various “garden spots” in the mideast, I had no interest in sand in my teeth. Or my clothes or food…. I stayed inside with the comment “sucks to be out there….” as I watched people attempting to walk around Deck 10.

As you probably gathered, comms went out for a significant length of time.

None of this affected me at all. Except for not being able to post this on time due to lack of internet.

HOA & Djibouti

Holly Doyne Posted on 2017-03-17 by Holly2017-03-18 2

Watching the map this morning as we w\sailed through the narrowest part of the straights (which I am sure was planned for daylight) I was reminded of how little I miss the Arab Middle East. Or HOA (Horn of Africa) or that nasty place in 2003-4 referred to Djibouti and should be only visited if you never left the airfield.

According to the [ex]Marine I met up with on deck this morning, we were due to pass through the narrowest portion of the straits at 0900. At least that is what the front desk told him when we called. Neither of us being all that stupid about geography and willing to look at the progress screen on the telly, we were on the deck right before 0600. Since sunrise was around 0515, this explains why we slowed down so much overnight. This area is definitely one to pass during the day.

Looking off to Port, the African coast is receding in the distance. And is plain, we are not exactly the only ship making this passage.

On the Arabian Peninsula side…

With neither side looking all that welcoming.

Sailing the Gulf of Aden

Holly Doyne Posted on 2017-03-16 by Holly2017-03-18 6

Last night started the overnight blackout period with Decks 4 & 10 off limits. Deck 9 remains open but the lighting is limited. Same with any of the lounges with windows that can’t be completely covered. It is not that I mind sitting the dark. It is just that I like to be able to see food, drink and cross-stitch.

During the day, Jill and I spent time again in the Viking Crown stitching. There are always people stopping by. Mostly but not always women with comments. From the crew it is about their mother or grandmother who stitched and/or taught them. From fellow passengers it is usually comments about the pieces. So far, ID rate on cross-stitch is running 80%. Actually better than knitting which non-fiber folks get right only about 50%! After all, if you can chose between knitting and crochet why not make a random guess?

There were star fruit and passion fruit in the Windjammer last night and I am about to eat the last of the pomegranates.

Since it is pull the drapes and keep the lights down time (along with another time zone change tonight) I am thinking about an early bedtime.

Formal Night

Holly Doyne Posted on 2017-03-14 by Holly2017-03-14
Bitter Chocolate soufflé (which my spellchecker doesn’t recognize)- what can I say? It was wonderful and lasted all of a few minutes. One of those food items which falls into the category of “only the temperature impedes devouring it in 10 seconds flat.”  I love it but have absolutely no desire to burn my mouth.

The rest of the dinner was fine, but not outstanding. My fellow passengers? Some of them were outstanding and shouldn’t have been. Personal opinion – if you are over 80, skinny as a rail, leather skin and unsteady on your feet wearing heels and gold lace sleeveless dress with cutouts is probably not a good idea. Neither did I appreciate the fashion sense of a couple of the men whose tuxedos probably fit a few decades and many kilos ago. I can only recommend braces (suspenders) as a really good idea…. Fortunately there were not too many of the younger set mostly wearing skin art plus the occasional bit of what the rest of us would view as underwear.  Admittedly, I wasn’t all that dressed up (fancy top, black pants… reasonably age appropriate. Except perhaps for the Stance socks..

Showing my age aren’t I?

The number of senior loyalty club members has more than doubled which made todays reception last a long time. Last time? 30-35 minutes and everyone was out the door. This time it was more than an hour till I had my nice quiet space back.  Due to the crowding in the lounges, Jill and I have moved up to the Viking Crown with our cross-stitch.  Just prior had been the Cruise Critic M&M. I had a chance to put faces with some names and actually won something in the drawing. They were even kind enough to let me have a backpack rather than the bottle of wine. I was pleased and so was the woman who got the bottle of wine (rather than the backpack). Good all around.

We have another time zone change tonight and a safety drill in the morning before entering the Gulf of Aden.

Legend – her last cruise

Holly Doyne Posted on 2017-03-13 by Holly2017-03-13 4

her last route

When we arrive in Barcelona, the Legend will be leaving RCCL and going to Thompson/Tui.  We will be setting sail in the evening. I am hoping for the Suez during the day since one can never have too many digital photos, can one?  I might get off the ship in Malta, but haven’t made that decision as of yet.

It will be a bittersweet journey. I really like the ship and staff. There are ships which I have cruised more often, mostly because of location and time frames. But the Legend? She has been the venturesome ship, the one to try new ports, new travel routes.  I understand intellectually the idea of disposing the smaller and more expensive ships, but there are of those who pick them for their size, lack of whiz-bang and diminished number of the under 15 set.

The Itinerary as Planned

Monday, March 13 Dubai, United Arab Emirates 8:00pm

Tuesday, March 14 At Sea

Wednesday, March 15 At Sea

Thursday, March 16 At Sea

Friday, March 17 At Sea

Saturday, March 18 At Sea

Sunday, March 19 Suez Canal, Egypt (Cruising)

Monday, March 20 Suez Canal, Egypt (Cruising)

Tuesday, March 21 At Sea

Wednesday, March 22 Athens (Piraeus), Greece 6:00am 6:00pm

Thursday, March 23 At Sea

Friday, March 24 Valletta, Malta 7:00am 5:00pm

Saturday, March 25 At Sea

Sunday, March 26 Barcelona, Spain 6:00am

From Barcelona, I will be beating feet for the airport. Due back at the Center on the 29th and should still be pretty much timezone whacked.

BTW – I did get off the ship today. We had to, otherwise I didn’t see the point. Since the shuttle bus to the mall was free – that seemed like a much better deal than hanging out in the terminal.

The usual buildings were passed. The Frame is still…… under construction and just as stupid looking as before. Pictures obviously taken from the moving bus…

Surprisingly, some items are limited. For example stationary supplies and reading lights. No one carried the Pilot erasable pens and apparently clip on reading lights, even LED, are now passe.  Back on board by noon, the DL was the place to hang out till it became well overcrowded…

Joys of food

Holly Doyne Posted on 2017-03-12 by Holly2017-03-13

Since it had been a number of years since I have been on the Legend, ok – two and a half – Fall TA in 2014, it seemed like a good idea to do another galley tour. Plus with the number of C&A guests on the next cruise it didn’t seem worth waiting.

It was one of the best tours in years, the Chef –

toured us through deck 4, deck 5 and would have gone on probably another hour had most of us not been due for lunch.

gravy for hundreds
the soup crew

and a few varieties of bread
Deserts for the buffet

I found out that they bake their own nan, but buy papadums.

As if we had not been exposed to enough food already, the “Meal with an Officer” was held today as well. The buffet, set up where they hold the Chef’s Table

starters
sushi
deserts

plus a double-sided set of hot foods.

However, what I really wanted to tell you was the follow up from speaking with Chef Andy (the Executive Chef) the other night. He said that he had purchased fruits in Mumbai. I told him I hadn’t seen the promised pomegranates yet.

And then I returned to my cabin….

and this is what I found on my coffee table
containing this
which turned into this

a good start
the debris

Creepy Critters

Holly Doyne Posted on 2017-03-11 by Holly2017-03-12 1

Imagine my shock when coming back from upstairs. I had headed up to a reception which I found was called on account of wind. Not unexpected, I have no clue why the ship’s crew thought that a reception on a formal night on the aft of Deck 9 would be a bright idea. Admittedly it is a better idea than holding something on the prow, but still. There is wind. There are people dressed up. There is food…… not a good combination at all.

Anyway – on my way downstairs –

On Display

Obviously there had been a towel folding demonstration. I can only be grateful that one of my routine instructions to my cabin attendant is to “spare the towels and keep away those things.”

Just in case you have never been the victim of something strange on returning to your cabin on a cruise….

as examples.

Tomorrow is our last day. Might do a couple of the usual behind the scenes tours. There is a luncheon. And, of course there is packing since I am once again changing cabins….

Mumbai

Holly Doyne Posted on 2017-03-10 by Holly2017-03-11 2

I’m starting to think of him as my personal chef. If he isn’t answering the phone at room service, the minute anyone recognizes that it is me calling they go and get him. He is from Mumbai and tells me that it has been wonderful preparing special dishes from home. In fact, his home city is Mumbai. He was able to leave the ship early today and spent the day home with his family. He was more than cheerful on the phone this evening but disappointed to find that I had hit the Windjammer when it opened. There was goat & asparagus quiche, bok-choy and star fruit. The head chef informed me on the way out that there will be pomegranates tomorrow.

I was up and standing at the rail this morning when we docked. The cruise terminal shares a pier with their Navy. Most of the new city is 8km away. But, as I was told later, there is plenty to see right out the gate.

So instead, my day was spent making progress on files management and my fractal clocks.

and note the harbor activities.

Back to Sea

Holly Doyne Posted on 2017-03-09 by Holly2017-03-10

The owl and the pussy cat went to sea
in their beautiful pea green boat…

Well, I only have the owls on one scarf and there are absolutely no cats in sight. If I want cats, I have to settle for pictures sent to me by the Eldest and Maus. [now, doesn’t that sound strange? Cat pictures from Maus].

Anyway. I had a lovely day doing not much of anything. Taking advantage of loyalty perks, I did take the opportunity to tour the bridge figuring limited availability on the next cruise. Not likely before the Suez, certainly not during Gulf of Aiden through, and limited number of days after. Plus with the increase in senior loyalty program members things are going to get crowded.

The instrumentation is original from the ship build in 1995. Obviously there have been multiple software updates since then. The young Romanian second officer was both articulate and funny. He managed to answer a lot of questions while conveying his pride in being part of the fleet staff.

The rest of my day was devoted to relaxing, napping and a bit more on the cross stitches.

The Cochin I didn’t sea.

Holly Doyne Posted on 2017-03-08 by Holly2017-03-09 4

As we sailed in, I sat and watched as first the industrial area went by, some lovely houses with fishing vessels and then the new city at a distance. Rather than dock at the city proper, we docked at one of the outer islands.

and fishing vessels @ dock
lovely homes

typical local ferry
new buildings

Looking out the starboard side at the dock, there were buses galore, industrial port and a line of vendors under white opened sided tents. Mentally I placed “go out and look at the vendors” somewhere above cutting toenails and below eating off ship. That is – not really high on my to-do list. There is a synagogue in the area and that would have been a nice visit. But given the population density and my current vulnerability to infectious disease I labeled the idea as not worth doing.

Instead, I had a lovely time chatting with various people and enjoying another supper delivered by room service –

just the right amount

Of course, the nagging to return landing cards started about 1900 when they announced they needed them ALL back. Even if you never bothered to get off ship. And here I thought it was going to be my souvenir of India….

Cross stitch update –

The flower spray

and

the start on the clock

Tomorrow we are back at sea for a day of peace, quite and a bridge tour. Why not? Last opportunity on this ship….

Amazing Service

Holly Doyne Posted on 2017-03-07 by Holly2017-03-08 15

There we were, Jill and I happily sitting in my cabin and working on our respective cross-stitches when a knock came at the door. Answering, it was a nice young man from room service who dropped off a tray with three sets of what looked like entrees, two sets of silverware, smiled and beat feet out the door before I could say a word or tip him.

???? I mean, we had been talking about going up to the Park Cafe for maybe soup or salad. I had pretty much just had fruit for breakfast so lunch definitely was in order. Admittedly, I had chatted with the Sous-chef the other day about mostly ordering from room service and inquiring about the availability of Indian since it isn’t on the normal menu (much less anything other than sweet potato fries and deserts being of vegetarian persuasion. )

Apparently my absence had been noted and both she and a couple of other staffers were worried I wasn’t eating properly. So here I had a lovely coconut milk based curry with pressed cheese, popadoms, nan, dahl, three condiments as sides, rice. Thank goodness Jill was around to help me eat since it was enough food for many. So much in fact that I called room service around 1700 to reassure them that I wouldn’t need supper. Obviously the cabin number shows up on the system – the manager on that name answers the phone with “what can we get you Miss Holly!”

From here on in, I am just going to be sensible. If I don’t put in an order they will bring me food and probably too much. So I will enjoy the nice upgraded cabin for the rest of the cruise, room service for 1-2 meals a day and all the lattes I can drink in the lounge.

Cross stitch

this has become

this

and is the project I just started. Tried working on black and gave it up as stupid, switching to navy as a better option…

Legend of the Seas – 3 March

Holly Doyne Posted on 2017-03-03 by Holly2017-03-02

To the usual format, may I add …..  boarding today for 10 days of doing nothing but cross-stitch, knitting and dealing with a lot of computer files. Harborfront is not that far of a walk but since I have two good friends also staying here, we have decided to split a cab. I’d show you a map, but really, I think you can figure it out.

Date Port Arrive Depart
Friday, March 3 Singapore 5:00pm

Saturday, March 4 Penang, Malaysia 3:00pm 11:00pm

Sunday, March 5 At Sea

Monday, March 6 At Sea

Tuesday, March 7 At Sea

Wednesday, March 8 Cochin, India 8:00am 8:00pm

Thursday, March 9 At Sea

Friday, March 10 Bombay (Mumbai), India 7:00am 6:00pm

Saturday, March 11 At Sea

Sunday, March 12 At Sea

Monday, March 13 Dubai, United Arab Emirates 6:00am

At this point, I have no intention of disembarking in any port. My India Visa is good till 2026 but having experienced northern India while healthy, I am reticent to risk my health at this point for the privilege of being jostled in crowds or being exposed to sun, heat, humidity, or insects.

The good news? The upgrade fairy dropped by yesterday. I was perfectly happy in my cabin and being pleased with not having to change cabins between legs. Now I will have to do that, but I really don’t mind. As far as I can tell, there were only a handful of us affected. I’ll enjoy the space, the bathtub and the ability to stitch with a friend everyday without facing the hordes of the lounges.

The hat saga

Holly Doyne Posted on 2017-02-07 by Holly2017-02-07 8

talking about the Exeter Hat for Bill took me back to when I started this whole, perhaps has not silly, knitting hats for fellow cruisers. The year was 2013 and I had been back cruising on Royal Caribbean for a couple of years. The ship was the Radiance and I was going to be leaving the ship at the end of the cruise after doing a number of back to back to back cruises and headed home to Germany. Early in this last cruise, I was talking to the hotel director who mentioned going on vacation (New York) at the end of the cruise and how he wasn’t going to be prepared for the cold. I looked at him – would you like a hat so at least your head would be warm?

he was pleased. In return, he mailed (it must have been hats) to Maus who was going to school in NYC.  Then someone else asked for a hat –

which I knit the next day because it was easy.

and didn’t think any thing more about it.

Fall of 2014 rolled around and it was cold on the North Atlantic

easy stripes

then there was the Splendour in fall of 2015 where there were several people headed back to places seriously colder than Venice or Dubai

since England can get cold

I didn’t capture Egbert or Tony in their hats –

Egbert’s Hat
Tony’s hat

But I still think this one is the cutest.

Day 8 – the final day

Holly Doyne Posted on 2017-01-28 by Holly2017-01-29 7

Now doesn’t that sound completely dreary? Depressing? Needing a bit of a bracing wind and some sun perhaps?

I spent a goodly portion of today outside on Deck 4. It is the Promenade Deck (as apposed to the Promenade) where you can walk some what sheltered from the wind. It also has a shuffle board painted on the planks in one area and is lined by relatively comfortable lounge chairs. I commandeered one on the non-smoking side of the ship late morning and settled in for several hours of gazing at the sea, attempting to identify other cruise ships within sight (Princess) and knitting.  I managed to finish Chart 4 and start on Chart 5. Of course, even with fewer rows to each chart there is the small matter of constant increases so the rows are getting longer and longer and …..

I also toured the Bridge, saw the back of Studio B (the ice rink), packed my suitcase and tracked down my luggage tags. Since I was offered luggage valet service without charge, it seemed a sensible thing to do on the way home. If my luggage doesn’t arrive at the same time I do – well – I am home.

I’m actually looking forward to being home; sleeping in my own bed. Cleaning the garage, or follow up medical appointments? Not so much.  And I think I am going to have to really hunt for my chocolate covered strawberries. Failing them dropping onto a plate next to my bed, I will settle for the Meyer lemons which are finally ripening.

St Kitts x ?

Holly Doyne Posted on 2017-01-26 by Holly2017-01-30 10

I think this might have been my fourth, more likely the fifth time I have docked in St Kitts. Since I decided the price to ride the train was outrageous, I elected to do nothing. The train dates from those days when almost the entirety of the island’s  680 acres was planted in sugar cane. Up to 68 plantations, of course with the slave trade having provided all those whose manual labor would serve to make the owners, now good English one and all, quite wealthy.

In my case doing nothing entailed another lovely day spent on ship with very few other’s about. I spent time in the lounge. Snagged the rare and hidden mint tea bag for my afternoon refreshment and spent a bit of time knitting on Bonnie’s Shawl. I wasn’t happy with a couple areas the first time – so took the time today to restart.

Chart 1
Chart 2

and checking the schedule for tomorrow –

While I was at it, I packed up my towels and tote bags

the new tote bag design

into the duffle I brought for just in case along with extra shoes and dirty clothes. Ought to take me all of 10 minutes to pack on that last evening.

I did mention chocolate covered strawberries didn’t I?

even if they aren’t exactly ripe
