An Illiad
The Berkeley Repertory Theater is probably as much an institution on the cultural scene in Berkeley as is Freight and Salvage (where we saw the Woody Guthrie retrospective). An Illiad is a version of Homer’s tale adapted into essentially a one man and one musician show (along with a whole host of sound and lighting ninjas).
It was a good end to a long day which saw me hiking from the Claremont to Article Pract in Oakland. Back up Claremont Avenue to Afikomen in search of goodies then down Ashby to Lacis. After that it was toward downtown to Stone Mountain and Daughter for a pattern.
It was there my luck ran out. Yes, I know that there was an 80%+ chance of rain. Or at least showers. But I hadn’t experienced more than a few drops up to that point. Well, the heavens opened up and the rain came down in buckets. After hanging out for a long time. Maybe 10 minutes but it felt like a lot longer, I just couldn’t stand it and headed back out to the door to Any Mountain in search of a bargain. Failing that – in search of a backpack. It is a great store – and one where “buy two hot waxes and get one free” has nothing to do with either cars or skin.
Imitating a drowning rat, I had just started to look at sales racks when my phone rang. The DH! Would I like a ride back to the hotel?
My hero, saving me from a good hike in a jacket that had turned out to be not rainproof.
