It couldn’t have been more than the second or third day of the cruise. I had gone up to the Diamon Lounge intending to claim my latte followed by a dash to the cabin. Instead I wound up sitting outside the card room for about 30 minutes, fascinated by the music floating out from the grand piano. At the occasional break I could hear a soft voice discussing something related to a phrase in the music just performed. Not just a musician, I mused, but also an educator.
And so it is with Mr Wong. He is older but not elderly. One of the passengers, he is shy and retiring except when he speaks about music then he is lit up from the inside. For the rest of the sea days, he played upstairs for several hours. Classics like Schubert, Beethoven,Mozart, Bach, Brahams, flowed from his fingers while he explained some of the underlying melodies. O
