All the figs

My plan had been simple: ride along with George, get dropped off at Alison’s, get a chance to go to Andy’s Orchard, then reverse the trip.

Things started to go off the rails almost immediately. We were late leaving the house and the traffic was horrible. Result was that I needed to drop George off at his meeting, then drive over to Alison’s. By this time, after almost 2 hours in the car I simply wasn’t up for 90+ minutes round trip no matter how good the fruit.

Alison had been there yesterday and she brought me ALL the figs

three different kinds + one – ?plum? type thing. I need to ask about the types again, but I think the dark ones are Mission Figs. Delicious in any case.

Instead of a drive, I had time to just visit, admire the wonderful afghans she is creating and still get ALL the figs.

(Note: if anything, the traffic on the way back wasn’t particularly fun either. Taking a detour through Hayward turned out to be time saving)

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!

It made the New York Times yesterday that Andy Mariani, the reknown stone fruit breeder, is retiring at 80 with no heirs and no relatives who want to take over his farm, no matter how good the fruit when the land is worth a million an acre because of Silicon Valley creeping up to it.

My husband had the same reaction I did: Go. Go now. Don’t even wait till the afternoon, everybody’s going to want to.

I was fine with going two days in a row; it’s one of my favorite places and I love the people there. I picked up those figs knowing that if anything went wrong with our plans for today, you’d be set and be able to get your figs and I could always go again next week (and will anyway) and there will be more. I like to roast them and to freeze roasted ones for later, so I was good either way.

I am so glad it worked out! It was so good to see you. And thank you for the lemons from your tree!

Oh and the figs are Tiger aka Panachee, the striped ones, Black Madeira, which the Fig Forum has almost universally declared the best-tasting fig, and the third one I believe is an Excel. Checking my pictures, the one is a Delicioso plum. Have fun!
