437 Steps

Might not seem a lot to you, if they happened to be in a straight line. Let me just say that the change in elevation is real. From Pier 27 down Battery to ? Filbert? I think, I counted 437 stair steps up to the base of Coit Tower. I didn’t count elevation changes on the connecting paths. Just the stairs. Every last one of them (I think).

The park there opens @0500. Other than a few people out with very sociable dogs, I hardly saw anyone. My plan was to get a few pictures of the Bay, the bridges, perhaps the NCL Joy, and the sunrise. The first three happened along with some shots of downtown. The sunrise? Meh.

I headed towards downtown, stopping at Peet’s for coffee, then went on to sit in the central square and people watch for an hour before area shops opened up. I wandered a bit, then stopped at NeedlePoint, Inc on the way back. I picked up some lovely colors for a couple of LongDogSamplers on my list of want to be stitched.

Tired, I am back on the ship and sitting in the lounge on Deck 15. I can see both Alcatrez and the . Golden Gate Bridge from where I am sitting.

We sail out this afternoon; the original schedule said 1500 but the sign at the gangway said “all aboard at 1530…..” I hope that is not a predictor of what lies ahead.

I am currently using hotspot from my phone to the laptop and plan on getting a wifi plan tomorrow….Zoom call, sea day, and all of that….

About Holly

fiber person - knitter, spinner, weaver who spent 33 years being a military officer to fund the above. And home. And family. Sewing and quilting projects are also in the stash. After living again in Heidelberg after retiring (finally) from the U.S. Army May 2011, we moved to the US ~ Dec 2015. Something about being over 65 and access to health care. It also might have had to do with finding a buyer for our house. Allegedly this will provide me a home base in the same country as our four adult children, all of whom I adore, so that I can drive them totally insane. Considerations of time to knit down the stash…(right, and if you believe that…) and spin and .... There is now actually enough time to do a bit of consulting, editing. Even more amazing - we have only one household again. As long as everyone understands that I still, 40 years into our marriage, don't do kitchens or bathrooms. For that matter, not being a golden retriever, I don't do slippers or newspapers either. I don’t miss either the military or full-time clinical practice. Limiting my public health/travel med/consulting and lecturing to “when I feel like it” has let me happily spend my pension cruising, stash enhancing (oops), arguing with the DH about where we are going to travel next and book buying. Life is good!

My youthful self would have loved racing up those stairs and looking down!

My older self just enjoyed patting myself on the back for the successful climb. Plus, there was the occasional dog to pet on the way up.

My knees are ok. My one hip? Not so much. But when you come to visit …. it is possible to drive up!
